Using Zentangle to Practice Pattern Making & Design
The term Zentangle refers to an art making method that enables you to to create unique and complex designs using repetitive patterns. The trademarked Zentangle Method was invented by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. However, the instructions below are a modified version of their official method, using wikihow.com as the principal source of information.
How to Use the Zentangle Method (modified)
- Using a pencil, lightly draw a large shape to create a border on your page. The patterns you make will be drawn inside the perimeters of this border.
- Next, lightly draw a "string" inside the border. A string is a curved line or squiggle that you create to divide your border into sections.
- Create a tangle by drawing a pattern along the contours (edges) of your string. Tangles should be composed of very simple shapes (lines, dots, circles, squiggles, ovals, dashes and so on). Repeat these shapes over and over again to fill a section inside of your border with a specific pattern.
- Create other tangles in different sections. Focus intently on your work, paying attention to each mark you make. Build each pattern in a deliberate fashion, being sure to include interesting details in each pattern you design.
- Do not erase mistakes. All mistakes must be kept and incorporated into your design. This will require you to exercise your creativity, as well as encourage you to be thoughtful about every line you draw.
- Add shading to create more depth and visual interest. The shading should be done in the same methodical fashion that you used to create your original patterns. In other words, be consistent in how you shade specific pieces of your pattern in each section of your design.
